Diesel Pod Buying Guide (Australia): 10 Things to Check Before You Order

    8 min readUpdated 27 June 2026

Diesel pods all look the same in a product photo. After delivery, the differences are obvious — and expensive. Here are the 10 spec lines that actually decide whether your pod is still working in 3 years or sitting in the corner of the yard with a dead pump.

    1. Pump LPM (not just 'has a pump')

Minimum 40 LPM for a 200–400L pod, 56 LPM for 1000L+. Anything slower and you'll watch tradies stand around the tank.

    2. Automatic shut-off nozzle

Non-negotiable. Without it you'll flood ute tanks the first time you answer the phone mid-fill.

    3. Hose length and quality

4m minimum for small pods, 8m+ on a reel for 1000L. Cheap hoses crack at the swivel inside 12 months.

    4. Lockable filling cap

Diesel theft is real, especially on rural sites. A pad-lockable cap costs almost nothing to specify and saves thousands.

    5. Water separator (on 1000L)

10-micron water-separating filter on the pump output. Common-rail engines don't tolerate water. Joey's JD1000 ships with one standard.

    6. Tank material and wall thickness

Heavy-wall polyethylene for portable pods (UV-stable, won't rust, light), or steel for static storage. Cheap pods cut wall thickness — they'll deform under sun and load inside 2 summers.

    7. Warranty terms

12 months on tank, pump and fittings is the Australian standard for a properly-built pod. Anything less than 12 months on the pump is a red flag.

    8. Australian parts support

When the pump fails (and they all eventually do), can you get the seal kit shipped from a Sydney or Brisbane warehouse, or are you waiting 6 weeks for an overseas part? This is where cheap pods become expensive.

    9. Freight cost and lead time

Empty pods are bulky but not heavy — freight to regional addresses is usually 7–14 days from a Sydney or Brisbane depot. Joey ships from Glenorie (NSW) and Noosa (QLD).

    10. Total spend, not headline price

Add freight, the warranty value, and the cost of likely add-ons (water separator, hose reel) before comparing pods. A cheaper headline price often ends up more expensive once you've added the bits that should have come standard.
