Choosing a 1000L Diesel Tank: What Actually Matters

    7 min readUpdated 27 June 2026

A 1000L diesel tank is the sweet spot for farms, civil sites, mining-support crews and depot refuelling — big enough to last a working week, small enough to still move on a trailer. But not every 1000L pod on the Australian market is built the same way, and the spec gaps cost real money once you've signed for delivery. Here's what to actually compare.

Why 1000L is the practical limit for a portable tank

Below 1000L you're still in the world of ute-pod refuelling — fine for a single vehicle but a bottleneck for a fleet. Above 1000L you cross into self-bunded static storage territory, with the weight, footprint and (in many states) the regulatory paperwork that comes with it.
1000L hits the working compromise: roughly 850kg full, sits on a 6x4 trailer or a one-tonne ute tray, and refuels a fleet of utes for a working week before needing a top-up from your bulk supplier.
Joey's 1000L Diesel Fuel Pod ships with a 56 LPM pump, hose reel and water separator — the spec most depots end up needing within 12 months anyway.

Pump LPM and why 40 vs 56 matters

Pump flow rate is the spec that quietly decides how long your crew stands around the tank each morning. 40 LPM empties a 100L ute tank in about 2.5 minutes — fine for a 200–400L pod refuelling one or two utes. 56 LPM drops that to roughly 1.8 minutes and starts to matter when you're refuelling 6+ vehicles in a row, hose-reel work, or pumping into a header or excavator.
On a 1000L tank, 56 LPM should be the default. If a competitor's 1000L pod ships with 40 LPM and a shorter hose, you're paying for the capacity but losing the throughput it was meant to give you.

    Hose reel and hose length

A retractable hose reel is the difference between a tank you actually use and a tank that lives in the corner of the yard. Without one, the hose drags through dirt, kinks at the swivel, and tradies stop pulling it out for quick top-ups.
Look for: 8m+ delivery hose, automatic shut-off nozzle, and a reel built into the tank housing (not bolted on as an afterthought). Joey's 1000L ships with a hose reel as standard — see the full spec.

Weight, payload and where you'll actually put it

1000L of diesel weighs about 840kg. Add 60kg for the tank shell, pump and hose reel and you're at roughly 900kg full. That's well inside a 1-tonne ute payload empty — but watch combined payload if you also carry crew, tools and a tow.
Most operators end up running the 1000L on a dedicated trailer or a yard skid, refilling utes back at the staging area. Trying to drive it around half-full on rough tracks burns through fuel and wears mounts.

    Water separator and filtration

Modern diesel engines (especially common-rail) are intolerant of water in the fuel. A 10-micron water-separating filter on the pump output is non-negotiable on a tank this size — the volume of fuel you'll push through it makes the maths obvious. Joey's 1000L includes one as standard.

    Cost expectations in Australia

A properly-specced 1000L pod with 56 LPM pump, hose reel and water separator lands in the $3,500–$5,500 range in Australia. Cheaper than $3,000 usually means 40 LPM and no reel — you'll spend the savings replacing the pump inside 18 months.
